A Christian Alternative to Public Insurance

As Christians living in a Christian Community, we are self insured through our relationship with each other and through Jesus Christ.

We are convicted in our conscience against any public insurance, and assist each other charitably in case of sickness, accident, or property damage.

Our objection to public insurance is that it is out of harmony with God's way to support the needy, since God is able to take care of his people (Acts 6:1-6, John 19:25-27). Insurance also appeals to wrong motives -- fostering selfishness (Luke 6:33, 34) on one hand, and undermining thrift, an essential to the God-honoring life, on the other. To have insurance is an evidence of unbelief, a lack of faith in God and his promises (Psalms 118:8, 37:25, 1 Peter 5:7, Matthew 6:25, 26). It was also an "unequal yoke" (2 Corinthians 6:14-18) since both believers and unbelievers are policy holders.

The United States allows anyone of our religious belief to claim exemption to Social Security using IRS Form 4029, and so we do not receive death, disability or retirement benefits from Social Security. Health insurance is viewed in the same manner.

A list of churches that claim the IRS Form 4029 exemption from Social Security taxes is available here.

The Social Security Adminstration Form 1458 to claim a group as exempt from Social Security based on religious beliefs is available here and here.

Because we follow the Lord's Commandments to treat our body as a temple to the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19), and do not smoke, drink alcohol in excess, eat unclean food, and are chaste to reserve our temples for marriage, we do not have the diseases or health problems that the world has.

And the Lord has given us His herbs to heal us of any disease. (Hebrews 6:7)

For the Lord has said to us: "If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee."
(Exodus 15:26)

The Lord has brought us out of Egypt, and into His Blessed Assurance.

Therefore, we are assured and insured through God, and cannot take another form of insurance, as that would be idolatry.

This also holds true all forms of insurance, as we are commanded to work together as the Lord's Community to solve our own problems, and depend solely on Him for our earthly and eternal salvation.
